Foster Care

Consider opening your heart and home to a foster pet.
Your gift of love can change a life.
Fostering animals for the Gloucester-Mathews
Humane Society is a rich and rewarding experience. Many
animals arrive here with great potential to be loving
companions, but also with a need to learn, to trust and
interact with people again. Some animals may be sick, or
may have been injured. Foster families generously open
up their homes and hearts to provide these animals with
the extra time, love and care that is needed to help
them prepare for their new forever homes. In return for opening your
home and offering your love, your reward is a warm lap,
a wagging tail, and the knowledge that you helped save a
life. The more foster homes we have, the more animals
we are able to save.

Foster Care Commonly Asked Questions
-
What is the expected length of foster care? Every case is different. Foster care can take anywhere
from a few days to a few months, depending on the reason
for fostering. Any amount of time that you can
volunteer is helping an animal and us.
-
Can I foster if I have pets of my own? Yes. We require that your pets are current on their
vaccinations.
-
What if I only want to foster a particular type of
animal, such as kittens? Yes, you can specify what type of animal you are
willing to foster.
-
What do I do if my foster animal needs veterinary care?
In the event your foster pet should need veterinary
care, you need to contact a GMHS staff member or our
transport coordinator.
-
Do all furnish any supplies for foster pets? Typically, GMHS provides a pen, crate, food, etc for the
animal(s) in foster.
-
What if I want to adopt my foster animal? In order to foster, you must fill out an application.
Once this is filled out and approved you can
foster. This is the same application that we ask
potential adopters to fill out. Unless there is a
specific reason, that you would have been made aware of before
or during the time you are fostering the animal(s), you
should be able to adopt the animal.
-
Isn't it hard to say goodbye to foster animals?
Part of the joy of fostering is knowing that the animal
will get a great new family that will truly benefit from
your efforts. And, if you get lonesome, there will
always be another animal that needs your help.
