Surrendering a Pet
The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society seeks to
provide a safe, nurturing shelter for the homeless
animals of the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck areas.
Our role at the GMHS is not only to provide a safe
shelter for these animals, but also to provide resources
to the citizens of our community who may feel that
surrendering their pet is the only option they have.
To ensure the proper care of the animals in our facility, we
may have to institute a “waiting list” for the acceptance of
the owner-surrendered animals when our facility is at
maximum capacity. Appointments MUST be made by owners that
are surrendering their animal(s) so that we may have the
opportunity to serve as a resource for the animals and their
owners and not be a “dumping ground” for the animal(s). At
this time, it may be determined whether or not this animal(s)
is appropriate for surrender to the GMHS.
Before your final decision to surrender your companion
animal, please review our resource list below which
might enable your animal to remain in your home.
In the event that you must surrender your pet, please
take the following steps to ensure that the animal is
surrendered in the most calm, humane atmosphere
possible.
- Call to make an appointment. Pets are accepted for
surrender to the GMHS by appointment only, so that our
staff will have the opportunity to talk to the owner and
learn as much about the animal as possible in a calm and
orderly environment. Appointments for surrender can be
made by calling the shelter at (804) 693-5520 between
the hours of 11AM and 4PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,
Friday and Saturday. We are closed on Wednesday and
Sundays are for adoption only.
- At the surrender appointment, bring information on
the animal’s veterinary history. It will make it much
easier for us to find a new home for your pet if we have
its complete medical history, including a record of all
its vaccinations and past medical treatments.
Please be aware that the GMHS cannot accept animals with
a history of biting or aggressive behavior, due to the
danger that this poses to other animals and our staff.
We also cannot accept animals with acute or serious
health issues, as we are not a full-service veterinary
care facility. These animals should be taken to their
veterinarian for appropriate treatment options.
- Have verification of your address. Because our
shelter is usually full to capacity, we are limited to
accepting pets from areas not adequately serviced by
other sheltering organizations. If you are not sure if
there is another shelter in your local area, call our
office and we will assist you. Please also be aware that we cannot accept a pet for
surrender from an individual other than the pet’s owner,
unless prior arrangements have been made to do so with
our Shelter Manager.
- Effective September 1, 2009- If your animal is
accepted for surrender to the GMHS, the following
fees will apply:
• Cats, kittens and other small animals - $10.00 • Dogs and puppies - $20.00 • Litters or multiples - $5.00
/ each
