Campaign for Shelter…
More than just a building, it’s a solution.
The Gloucester-Mathews Humane
Society is one of the oldest continuously operated
animal shelters in America, opening its doors to 143
dogs in 1912. Today, we provide shelter, encourage
adoptions and offer humane education to the animals and
citizens of the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck
areas.
A team of volunteers has been working for several years
to raise the funds that have brought our dream of a new,
safe and compliant facility for the homeless pets of our
community to life. Construction on the new building
began in 2008 and our new shelter was completed in the
summer of 2009. Although our job of creating a better
place for the animals is completed, we still face the
reality of the cost of our project, and the money that
must still be raised to allow us to pay for the facility
so that all future funding can be put towards the care
of our animals.
How can you help us to help them?
- Make a pledge to the Capital Campaign. Pledges
to our project to raise funds, in either monthly,
yearly or multi-year increments, are the bedrock of
our goal to pay for our facility. Pledges can be
made by filling out our

- Explore “Gifting Opportunities” at the new
shelter. There are still many opportunities to
sponsor and name rooms and equipment in the new
shelter. This is a great way to honor a loved one
and to make a significant lasting contribution to
the ongoing welfare of the animals in our community.

- Say it on a brick. Our new shelter features a
Walk of Honor, paved with inscribed bricks that can
be purchased to honor or remember a beloved pet or
person in your life. These inscribed bricks can be
purchased by filling out our
brick order form or
