We place many kinds of animals--horses, cows, goats, ducks and rabbits . . . even hamsters! And we see to it that any wildlife that comes into the shelter goes to certified rehabilitators for care.

We conduct educational programs at local schools to instill responsible pet ownership at an early age.

We help lobby for laws that deal with the problems of overpopulation
and animal cruelty, and work closely with animal control officers and game wardens to assure the safety and well being of our local pet population.

The shelter provides extra donated pet food to disadvantaged families
to ensure that their animals maintain a healthy diet.

Our Pet Therapy program provides companionship for nursing home residents and shut-ins through visits by volunteers with puppies and kittens.
. . . AND YOU MAKE IT POSSIBLE!

The shelter is supported by donations from caring individuals, membership dues, and gifts from several community organizations. We also receive yearly contributions from the county governments of Gloucester and Middlesex. We act as the animal pound facility for Mathews County and receive a fee for every animal brought to the shelter either by a Mathews citizen or the Animal Control Officers. We also sponsor several fund raising events each year.

Much of our facility was built and is maintained by dedicated volunteers who donate their time and energy to this rewarding task.

The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society has a small, full time staff. However, many important tasks are accomplished by caring volunteers and made possible by generous donations.

Without the funds generated by these various sources and the continuing support of the community, we would be unable to provide a sanctuary for the unwanted animals in our area, and would be forced to curtail many of our programs.

We would love to have you join our growing family--whether through adoption of a loving companion or donation of time or money.

  • www.hsus.org (Humane Society of the United States)

  • www.iGive.com – One more way to support the animals by shopping online at iGive.  A percentage of the sales is sent to the Humane Society which is then used to care for the animals housed at the shelter.  With the holidays right around the corner, iGive.com provides you with another holiday shopping option and a way to care for the animals.Humane charity seal

  • www.humaneseal.org – Many donors look for health charities committed to patient services, education and vital research, but are concerned about the use of animals in research.  The Humane Charity Seal of Approval is the easiest way for health charities to communicate their commitment to providing vital services and care to patients or advancing research without the use of animals.

  • Food Lion’s Shop & Share Program – The GMHS has signed up for Food Lion’s Shop & Share Program.  Each time you shop at Food Lion and use your MVP card, a portion of your total grocery purchase will be donated to the GMHS.  You can either stop by your local store’s service counter and ask for a registration form or you can register your MVP card online.  Go to Food Lion Shop and Share, you will have to enter your card number – ALL 12 DIGITS. If you are unable to register your MVP Card online, please contact customer relations at 704-633-8250 extension 3810, and have your information entered over the phone.
